Preity Zinta Richest Bollywood Babe

Preity Zinta Richest Bollywood Babe

Is
Preity Zinta the richest girl in Bollywood today? It would seem so. The pretty co-owner of the Punjab IPL team, rough estimates say, is worth a whole lot of moolah.

Preity’s stake in her cricket team alone is valued at around Rs 350 to Rs 400 crores. Some cricket experts say the figure is higher. Besides which, the actress is also likely to be the legal heir of Shandar Amrohi, who is one of the co-owners of Kamalistan Studios (that originally belonged to Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi).
This property is also valued at hundreds of crores and is the cynosure of the eyes of several builders. There is a strong rumour that suggests that at some point, the astute business woman that she is, Preity will sell some part of her IPL stake and redevelop the Kamalistan property alongwith a high-profile builder from Pune. Since the perky Bollywood actress is currently travelling with her team and has no time to even breathe, news reports suggest that she will build on her other dreams eventually.

Preity Zinta's kins XI ads hurts Bhagat Singh’s grandson sentiment

The IPL season I saw a showdown between the Mohali police and Ness Wadia over smoking in the stands, Season II was all about the Slapgate between Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, and now, they are in the news for an ad featuring their team in a Chandigarh newspaper.

The advertisement, which appeared on March 13, read, “The stadium was silent. Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru had just walked into the stands. Are you the wildest Kings XI fan in the stadium? Then you are fan of the match...” This ad led to some NGOs moving court, and also some protest demonstrations in and around the stadium. Now, Bhagat Singh’s grandson, Abhey Singh Sandhu, has submitted a written complaint to the Mohali police, and has also filed a suit in court in Chandigarh, which is set for a hearing today.

We spoke to Team Punjab chairperson, Preity Zinta. “It was not our intention to hurt anybody’s sentiments. I have been informed that the recent ad has hurt some people’s sentiments, which was not what we wanted. I have the utmost respect for leaders of past who made sacrifices for the country. We apologise to the people. The advertisement will be recalled with immediate effect.”

Team senior vice president (operations) Col (retd) Arvinder Singh said, “We have already apologised and we will do it again. I am meeting the senior police officers in this connection. It will be premature to say anything else as some people have taken legal recourse. The ad has been withdrawn and we are hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon.” Talking about Sandhu’s and Global Human Rights Commission lawyer Arvind Thakur’s complaint, Mohali SSP GPS Bhullar said, “I have marked an inquiry into the matter.” SP (detective) Varinder Pal Singh, who’s conducting the probe, said, “I have summoned team management and have asked them to join the probe. We have also recorded some statements.”

Thakur said, “This amounts to hurting the feelings of millions of Indians. How can someone use the names of freedom fighters for commercial gain? We have made Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta parties in this issue.” Wadia and co-owner Mohit Burman refused to comment. 's

Preity Zinta Clear her Relation with Ness

Durban: After denying for so long, Preity Zinta has finally confirmed that she has split with Ness Wadia.

Both co-owners of Kings XI Punjab, the actress and the Bombay Dyeing heir, had been together since 2005. Both of them were at the ground for the match, but sitting separately.

Zinta, apparently sent an official mail to her team to clear the air about her equation with Ness Wadia.

Preity Zinta like to keep distance

Preity Zinta who’s in South Africa with her cricket team is cool as a cucumber most of the time.

But when people whom she barely even knows get familiar with her, she finds it hard to take. Though she’s most charming, sweet and often genteel with fans, Zinta likes to keep a wee bit of distance. She tells us, “I am fine with people posing with me for pictures, but what I don’t like is when some put their hand around my waist or shoulders! When you don’t know someone too well, it gets awkward and this is something I just don’t like.” So next time you try to put your arm around this lady, remember touching is touché.

Preity's team connects with fans around the world

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) players, Brett Lee, Sreesanth, Kumar Sangakkara and Ranadeb Bose together with club co-owner, preity zinta, connected with fans from around the world and young South African cricket players during an event conducted recently in Cape Town. The event witnessed the launch of the club’s mobile fan club with mig33, the leading global mobile community. The partnership will give KXIP fans the chance to engage directly with each other and Kings XI Punjab players via mobile phone.

The event took place at Nyanga Cricket Stadium in Nyanga Township, just outside Cape Town in South Africa. One of the oldest townships in the area, this community is racked by poverty and has little access to sporting facilities. Over fifty young players from two local schools received the opportunity of a life time when they took on Kings XI Punjab players in the nets.

The Kings XI Punjab players saw the youngsters how to show off their batting and bowling skills. Questions were also fielded on them by the young cricketers who were eager to know their Heroes and about cricket in general. Based on these questions, a young player was selected by the team to walk with their captain for Toss during their inaugural match against the Delhi Daredevils on Sunday.

At the stadium the Kings XI Punjab players as well as preity zinta engaged in a live chat in the mig33 Cricket FanZone. After joining the mobile fan club, Kings XI Punjab fans can “watch” matches live with other fans on their mobile phones in dedicated chat rooms complete with live ball-by-ball commentary, receive important news updates from the team, meet new friends and buy official Kings XI Punjab virtual merchandise in the mig33 content store. Members also get access to the Kings XI Punjab Chat Stadium and chat live with their cricket Heroes.

During the live chat Preity Zinta fielded a range of questions from who she considers her best player to whether she would ever make a movie about cricket. Commenting on her experience preity zinta said, “It was amazing to connect with so many fans from around the world and be so close to them while sitting in South Africa. I hope that our fans will use this platform to ignite passion and support the team during the IPL. I look forward to this association with mig33 and to engaging in future chats with our fans.”

Preity Zinta Ask to Bring the change you want

Not only is Preity Zinta setting an example for every responsible citizen of India to vote, stars like Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan will be in Mumbai on V-day (read Vote day) to cast their valuable votes.

Preity and SRK who will be in South Africa during the election time for the IPL season will take a day off from their hectic schedule to be in Mumbai to exercise their vote on April 30 (that’s the day when Mumbai goes to poll). If SRK and Preity are busy with IPL, Aamir, who holidaying in the US, will fly down to Mumbai, just to cast his valuable vote.

This time, most stars (with the exception of Salman Khan ) are keeping themselves away from campaigning. There were rumours that Aishwarya Rai might campaign for her uncle Amar Singh’s Samajwadi Party, but the star is busy with shootings. According to sources, Congress was keen to rope in the bold and outspoken Preity to campaign for them, but the actress is either not interested or too busy.

Not only are these actors doing their bit, in fact, director-producer Karan Johar has joined hands with various celebs to create awareness about voting among people. Karan has made a short film ‘Kuch Nahi Ho Sakta’ for Lead India campaign with the help of young stars who are also youth icons to encourage people to vote and make an informed choice about the candidate they vote for.

Stars like Imran Khan , Kareena Kapoor , Priyanka Chopra , Deepika Padukone , Ranbir Kapoor , Abhishek Bachchan , Ritesh Desmukh , Asin , Shahid Kapur , Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor took some time out to be part of this joint venture and urged citizens to use their fundamental right without a miss in Karan’s film.

Emirates Title sponsor for Preity Zinta's Kings IX Punjab

preity zinta
No it was not Preity Zinta’s charming ways that made the Dubai-based global airline; Emirates sign a three year sponsorship deal with the Mohali team. It was plain marketability of cricket that made the leading airlines decide to become the title sponsor of Preity Zinta co-owned and Yuvraj Singh led team in the upcoming IPL cricket tournament. Preity Zinta however thanks the airlines that allows you to take a shower on board.

Kings IX Punjab has what the IPL teams do not have - a beautiful and vibrant owner called Preity Zinta. And so for the Punjab team, there is no shortage of sponsors. Till date, the team has tied p with eight other corporate sponsors and global airlines - Emirates is the latest to join the bandwagon. The Dubai based airlines has just announced that it is going to be the title sponsor of the Mohali based franchise that has vivacious Preity as one of its owners and hard-hitting Yuvraj as its captain. "We welcome Emirates to our family as the title sponsor," said Preity Zinta in an official release for the Mohali based franchise, "I would like to thank Emirates for its long-term partnership with the Kings XI Punjab. Emirates is a front runner in sports sponsorships around the world. Emirates is a great airline, with great cabins and a great place to have a shower onboard," she added.

On the global airline’s part, the sponsorship deal is the recognition of the fact that cricket is the number one sport in the country with over one billion population. In a country, where Emirates happen to have a big customer base, cricket can greatly help the airlines connect to their customers. Emirates connects 10 destinations across India with the rest of the world via Dubai. So far as South Africa is concerned, it operates three daily flights to Johannesburg and a daily flight to Cape Town. From 1st October, Durban will be added to its daily flight destinations in South Africa. With IPL fever catching up like wild fire in both the countries, the Emirates investment came as a very astute business move.

Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman, Emirates Airlines and Group, said: “Emirates is a great supporter of global sporting events, and we are very excited to announce our partnership with the Kings XI Punjab team.” With cricket being the number one sport in India, it was only natural for us to form a partnership with one of the leading teams in the Indian Premier League; a tournament that invokes such passion amongst the cricket fans all around the world. “This three-year sponsorship commitment will allow Emirates to become closer to our customer base in one of the most important regions on our network.”

However, Emirates is not an all together new player in the international cricket circle. Before grabbing the limelight as the title sponsor of the Kings XI Punjab, Emirates has also been an Official Partner of the ICC. It also sponsors the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Referees. In addition of Emirates, the King’s IX has eight more sponsors. “'All our sponsors are dynamic and share the common passion to promote the game of cricket. With their support and our talented team, Kings XI Punjab is ready to win the IPL trophy,” Preity Zinta concluded in her characteristic spirited way.

Preity Zinta Launches Kings XI Punjab Team's T-shirt

Preity Zinta, chairperson Kings XI Punjab, charmed at the launch of her team’s T-shirts for the upcoming IPL season at Taj Lands End, Bandra Mumbai on Saturday April 11.

April 12, 2009, - Preity Zinta, chairperson Kings XI Punjab, charmed at the launch of her team’s T-shirts for the upcoming IPL season at Taj Lands End, Bandra Mumbai on Saturday April 11.

The team, captained by Yuvaraj Singh, is sponsored by Emirates Airlines and eight other sponsors.

The 34-year-old Heaven on Earth star looked cool wearing the team’s red and silver Tee with black pants.

The Tee has been designed by the actress with the help of the team's apparel partner Reebok.

Preity’s Jennifer Aniston inspired hairstyle was a charm! Opting for a sporty look she accessorized with just her good fortune stone rings - a yellow topaz gold ring in right hand index finger and a cat eye ring in right hand middle finger.

Her makeup was restrained: she wore clear lip gloss and 50's style eyeliner and shadow on top lid only with lots of mascara.

A no show at the event was Kings XI Punjab co-owner and Preity’s beau - Ness Wadia. His absence is likely to be gleefully played up by a Mumbai tabloid that, despite denials by Preity, steadfastly maintains that the couple has split.

Other sponsors for Mohali IPL team include Gulf Oil, Nimbooz, Netlinkblue, Reebok, Springbok Intl, Royal Challenge, Dabur Glucose-D and Orbit.

Preity Ness on verge of break-up

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia surely make a hot couple. Till recently, they had been seen together in almost all the functions. But there seems to be a crack in their relationship if the latest news is to be believed. Now, speculations are rife that they are splitting.

Yes the grapevine is abuzz with the news all is not well with the couple. Preity and Ness, who own Indian Premiere League (IPL) team Kings XI Punjab, looked inseparable last year while promoting for their team. But the story is different this time around. They are hardly seen together.

Moreover, Preity attended most of the glamorous events without Ness. They were together in last year's Filmfare awards but Preity was alone this year. Ness didn't attend this year's Lakme India Fashion Week. Now, rumours are doing the rounds that they are trying to keep away from each other.

Well, we are yet to hear from the couple if they are really parting ways. Keep waiting!

Its Splitsville for Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia?

Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia
have apparently called it quits as a couple though they continue to be together in their professional ventures which include ownership of the IPL team Kings XI Punjab. Given the amount of money involved in being a franchisee owner, this is not surprising.
Though Preity and Ness are no longer in a personal relationship, they continue to be professional partners

The facts speak for themselves. At the Filmfare Awards, Preity turned up without Ness. For the IPL press conference they were together (a professional assignment) though not hand in hand as they usually are and again at the recently concluded Fashion Week she came to cheer dear friends Shah Rukh Khan and Manish Malhotra but Ness was nowhere to be seen. While one is not suggesting a couple should be joined at the hip, Preity and Ness usually made a point to attend most dos together.

Interestingly Ness’s mum Maureen Wadia, who is all praise for daughter-in-law Celina (married to Jeh, her elder son), has never publically acknowledged Preity, getting pretty testy when asked about her, often resorting to a ‘no comments’ stand.

The Preity-Ness relationship has been an on-off one for some time now, with periodic rumours of a split. But this time it seems to be serious. And though Preity laughed it off when asked, one understands that when millions of rupees are involved, personal equations have to be put on the backburner.

Preity Zinta reveals her fitness mantra in ‘Prevention’

If you have always been wondering about the secret behind Preity Zinta’s glowing face and bubbly smile, grab a copy of the April issue of the magazine ‘Prevention’ where the chirpy actress reveals all about her fitness routine, IPL, her diet, favorite foods, and the secrets behind her energy and her motivation in life. The cover page of the magazine features the actress in a bright blue and the inside pages of the mag covers the candid interview with this chirpy chick where she describes herself as ‘’I am happy with what I have'’.

When Brett sang for Preity

Actor Preity Zinta, say sources, was very impressed by the performances of her Australian cricketers in the ongoing IPL. Hence, she not only threw a farewell party for them, before they bid adieu to the league for their national duty, but also danced the night away with her Mohali team.

Preity’s team (bought for $76 million for a 10-year term), flaunts the likes of Brett Lee, Simon Katich, James Hopes. Captained by Yuvraj Singh, it is currently fourth in the league and has garnered eight points after playing six matches. Simon played two matches and made 95 runs; Lee played four matches, took four wickets and made 17 runs. Hopes played three matches, made 105 runs and took two wickets.

“Preity is very pleased with the Australians as they have contributed to the fortunes of her team. She wanted to give something back to them. So, she threw a party after Mohali won against the Delhi side. Preity too danced the night away with them. The party went on till four in the morning. Preity had also invited the Delhi team to join in. Some Delhi players were present,” reveals the source.

He adds, “Brett also sang during the party. It doesn’t matter if Mohali wins or loses, parties happen every night. Cricket is a sportsman’s game after all. You win some and you lose some and Preity believes in this motto too.”

Kolkata still stands by Knight Riders

Kolkata: After four consecutive defeats, the "Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo" motto may be losing tempo, but fans of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are unperturbed with some even looking to the gods above.

"We will perform a yagna (fire ritual) to ward off ill-omens and pray for the victory of KKR in every match," said 27-year Kamal Saraf.

"The KKR are just undergoing a bad patch. But Shah Rukh will never let his team lose at the IPL (Indian Premier League)," added Shahjahan Ali, a 22-year old KKR supporter.

Akhtar's ban suspended, to play in IPL

The hype surrounding the team, owned by film star Shah Rukh Khan, began to fade after their second victory. Now, with their fourth defeat against the Preity Zinta owned Kings XI Punjab at Mohali Saturday, KKR have reached the bottom of the IPL table.

Cricket fans here are also supportive of KKR captain Sourav Ganguly despite his spat with Shane Warne.

Special: Indian Premier League | IPL 2008 Match Schedule

Avantika Pande, a Ganguly fan, said: "KKR's defeats are not solely Dada's (Sourav Ganguly) responsibility. It was unfortunate that the team has to let go big guns like Ricky Ponting and Brendon McCullum at this crucial point. But we are relieved that Shoaib Akhtar has been permitted to play for the KKR."

"Dada is a revolutionary figure in Indian cricket. We must notice the difference between the controversies that Dada and Warne get involved in. Dada knows some situations and players are to be dealt in a particular way. But even then he never goes beyond the limits of professionalism," said Arjan Pal, member of Saurav Ganguly fan club.

Some feel that team-owner and crowd-puller Shah Rukhs's absence at the matches played at Chennai, Jaipur and Mohali have affected the team.

"Surely his absence affected the team to some extent. But Shah Rukh has promised to be present in all the KKR matches at Eden Gardens and that's more than we want. As for the team, it is not playing for Shah Rukh but to win the IPL," said Shraddha, a 30-year software engineer.

Psychiatrist Shraboni Mukherjee said: "It is Shah Rukh's responsibility to be with the KKR. His presence does adversely affect the team in a big way. Just imagine how lost the KKR must have felt when Preity Zinta was cheering up her boys Saturday."

Ticket sales for the May 8 KKR versus Bangalore Royal Challengers match at the Eden Gardens here were to start Sunday at the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) ticket-counters.

But according to sources at CAB, the authorities got such limited tickets that they returned the tickets to Shah Rukh's company Red Chillies Entertainment.

Preity’s winning spree!

preity_yuvi
Preity Zinta, the only woman and the youngest owner of an IPL team is on cloud nine these days as her team has finally clicked and have begun winning matches! After cheering her team which lead to their first two consecutive wins(after consecutive losses), on her short visit to Mumbai before leaving for Hyderabad to witness her team’s yet another performance, Preity shared with us her team’s winning mantra!

“I am in Mumbai for a short while. I’ll be leaving for Hyderabad soon as my King’s XI Punjab will play their fifth match day after”, said Preity hurriedly.

Inspite of the Sreesanth-Bhajji fiasco post the match where they defeated the Mumbai Indians, Preity’s team managed to keep their cool and defeat Sehwag’s Delhi Daredevils right after! So what made the King’s XI win, we asked.

“A game is a game. You never know what can happen next! As far as my team is concerned, we knew we had the potential but you just need to click. My team has always played with great passion and they got their due”, said Zinta.

So does she consider herself as the ‘lucky charm’ of her team as quoted by many papers? “My involvement with the team is total. I am extremely passionate about our team and I do believe that I am the team's good luck factor, so I want to be there for everything”, said Zinta as a concluding note!

More power to this dimpled ambitious woman!

Sunil Sethi: Skin & Navel-Gazing, Indian Style

Showing a bit of skin is in. No it's not — not if you're blonde and white and come from down Texas way. Political protests in Maharashtra and West Bengal that have forced American cheerleaders at IPL matches to cover up and behave are, once again, a fine exhibition of the time-dishonoured Indian traditions of hypocrisy, xenophobia and misplaced prudery. It's cultural assault by the West when foreign women show cleavage, wiggle waists and indulge in high-kicking steps in stadiums — but it's lip-smackingly delicious when the country's cinemas and TV screens spill over with Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Mallika Shehrawat and Rakhi Sawant do the same. Compared to what Bollywood's babes get up to in public, American cheerleaders are innocents abroad. Surely more Indians are intimate with Bipasha's state of undress in Jism, Kareena's extensive, wafer-thin waistline in Tashan and Preity's micro-minis in Karan Johar movies than they are with Exhibits A, B and C of a few visiting cheerleaders?

Double standard or double vision? A case of both. Notions of sexual suggestiveness vary from place for place — Japanese geisha blacken their front teeth as provocation to clients — and distinctions between the pure and impure are variable. Prurience, like innocence, lies in the eyes of the beholder.

In America, skimpily-attired cheerleaders are as much a tradition as items girls and extras in Hindi film dance numbers. Cheerleaders are an organised group, their vocation being both specialised and hazardous. There are nearly 4 million cheerleaders practising their art — a combination of calisthenics and sexy gyrations — on college campuses and playing fields. In the US there are annual cheerleader awards, a wide-selling cheerleader magazine and a cheerleading foundation. About 25,000 cheerleaders are injured every year and require medical attention.

By contrast, Bollywood's dancers and Mumbai's dance bar girls, for all the skin they show and the dangerous lives they lead in the twilight zone, are unprotected and beleagured — exploited by clients, employers and the police, and harassed by ultra-conservative politicians bent on enforcing their puritanical moral code. For a harrowing account of Mumbai's demi mondaine there is the detailed real-life of Monalisa, a bar girl in Suketu Mehta's award-winning nonfiction narrative Maximum City. Given half a chance any of these Indian girls would gladly swap their lives with American cheerleaders — a Green Card would guarantee a higher safety standard than a G-string.

"Just a few cheering girls on the sidelines and people are upset … Entertainment is a part and parcel of sports worldwide," IPL boss Lalit Modi was quoted as saying the other day. Good point. When it comes to sex, Indians have a long and richly diversified repertoire of where to seek — and how to find — such entertainment. Current ideas of political correctness may prevent a truthful admission but some of the greatest stars of the Indian screen and of musical gharanas are descended from a lineage of courtesans, kothewalis and devadasis. Indian cinema owes its oldest debt to these strong-willed and talented women who made the transfer to screen in the early chapters of its history. An elementary reading of the Bollywood genre of storytelling is a confirmation of its voyeuristic, erotically charged content in music and dance. What else have the long lineup of vamps, mujra queens, nautch girls and cabaret artistes (such as Helen) been purveying all these years?

Nor should the transition from the wet sari look to Western-style sartorial revelations be that surprising. The international fashion columnist Suzy Menkes was in India recently attending one of the fashion weeks. Asked about the most noticeable change in India she had observed in 17 years of visiting the country, she said: "The declining use of the sari. To me it is one of the most glamorous and sexy garments ever created. But I am sad, though not surprised, to see fewer women wear it."

Fashions change, in sex and style, as in any department of life. But the Indian habit of navel-gazing does not.

It will be SRK vs Preity at Mohali

MUMBAI: Now that the IPL has reached a stage beyond which teams can plead they are finding their feet, each side involved has to become serious about their cricket to ensure a place in the semifinals.

Looking forward to the rest of the tournament will, after the last few results, be a very different experience for both teams meeting at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali today.

Kolkata started their IPL campaign off in the most empathic style, Brendon McCullum ensuring a crunching win against Bangalore Royal Challengers in the inaugural game.

They followed that up with another victory against Hyderabad, and all of a sudden Sourav Ganguly’s team looked like the real deal, even if he and Ricky Ponting were unable to buy a run between them.

Since then, the cracks have widened. Kolkata have lost to Chennai, Rajasthan and even perennial losers Mumbai, and with McCullum and Ponting having bid farewell to the team, dark days are looming.

Punjab’s fortunes could not be more of a mirror image. The first two games were disappointing losses to Chennai and Rajasthan, but not that those two teams have shown just how strong they are, those results have been put in perspective.

What they have done even more to put the smile back on Preity Zinta’s face are consecutive wins against Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Kings XI will not escape the great Australian cull either however, as key fast bowler Brett Lee has also winged his way off to CA’s training camp.

In Dinda, Ishant Sharma, Agarkar and Kartik, Kolkata have a strong bowling attack that has fired all tournament.

The reason behind their woes has been the batting, and there is no ready replacement for the hope that McCullum used to provide. Laksmi Shukla has been a revelation, averaging 44 so far, but unless Ganguly and the high-priced David Hussey come good, Kolkata's troubles look set to continue.

Punjab can consider themselves favourites for the match; Pathan, Chawla, Sreesanth and VRV Singh have all bowled well, and the batting prowess of Sangakkara, Katich and Yuvraj has only been strengthened by Shaun Marsh's arrival.

Preity Zinta scores over King Khan

Life is unpredictable. Shahrukh Khan was on top of the world when the Indian Premier League took off. His team Kolkata Knight Riders won two consecutive matches, including the IPL inaugural match against Bangalore Royal Challengers. But the story has changed. Now, his counterpart Preity Zinta has scored over him.

King Khan brought in at least half a dozen Bollywood actors to cheer for his team when the IPL kicked off. He cheered his team to two consecutive wins but the downfall soon started. They lost all the three matches played later, including yesterday's match against Rajasthan Royals.

On the other hand, Preity's team Kings XI had a disastrous start, losing the first two matches. Everyone was feeling pity of this pretty girl, even more than her team. However, her team bounced back in style, winning all the three matches played later.

I'm treating IPL like a film: Preity Zinta

Indian Premier League has got the imagination of every cricket fan across the world. CNN-IBN spoke to the owners of King’s XI Punjab, better known as the Mohali IPL

team, Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia.

Meha Bhardwaj: Are you happy you’ve got just about everybody you wanted on the team, be it Sreesanth, Brett Lee…

Preity Zinta: Irfan Pathan, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Piyush Chawla...yes you’re right. We’ve got everybody we wanted. Thank God we already had Yuvi on the team.

Meha Bhardwaj: I know commercial interest is fine but…

Preity Zinta: I’m purely in for the game. I’ve been a sportsperson all my life and I think it’s time for some action now.

Meha Bhardwaj: And how much is Ness influencing you in this?

Preity Zinta: I think we have all influenced each other. I’m really lucky to be supported by such wonderful friends and partners. It’s a long journey.

Meha Bhardwaj: I want to take you guys back to the auction days. So much was happening. There was this whole talk about the kind of money that was going to be involved, the kind of money we’ve never heard of and suddenly you have players being sold off. As an Indian viewer, people were glued to television channels because they had never seen anything like this. So when you were sitting inside, what was going on inside – like putting in one crore…

Preity Zinta: This department was with Ness and Tom. I think they did a fantastic job and thanks to them and our coach we have the best team.

Ness Wadia: There was a lot of planning like any business meeting or pitch. So we went through it (our strategy) two-three times and also on the phone during lunch time. I think we had strategies in place. Most important thing was that we were not interested in pushing other people’s prices up. We were really interested in getting the players we wanted to get. We were so focussed on what we were doing, frankly speaking, the rest didn’t really matter. Of course, there’s luck as well.

Meha Bhardwaj: Were you also involved in the technical bit like — we are going to have three all-rounders, etc?

Preity Zinta: Of course, that’s team strategy.

Meha Bhardwaj: Were you a part of it as well Preity?

Preity Zinta: Honestly, on the table two nights before, it was all going above my head. So I sat back when it came to things I didn’t know about.

Meha Bhardwaj: How did the Brett Lee and Sreesanth happen? Did you go for Sreesanth because of the character he brings to the game?

Preity Zinta: No we have a fast wicket and on fast wicket we need fast bowlers. Of course, the strategy was put together by Tom and Ness. And there was budget to be considered too.

Ness Wadia: I think Sreesanth is one of the better players today in the Indian team. He’s been through that first high and now he’s sort of coming off, not into a low but in sort of a lull like most sportsmen do where they start thinking where am I, what’s happened etc. I’m pretty sure he is going to bounce back, and as far as the selection strategy was: everyone had 10 players and there was a number to be pulled out and whichever number came out, that was the number for bidding. So when we were looking at spinners, we were short of spinners and we had no spinners left. We had Ramesh Powar and Piyush Chawla, so we just wanted to safeguard ourselves and we took a lot of decisions which were risking our model as opposed to just going and buying for the sake of buying.

Meha Bhardwaj: Preity, are you going to be involved in just about everything when it comes to IPL. I’m not saying movie are going to take a backseat, but for the moment, before the launch and before the tournament begins, is Preity Zinta’s life about King’s XI for the moment?

Preity Zinta: Absolutely. King’s XI Punjab, is a team of Punjab and there cannot be a chance we don’t mention Punjab. It’s not a country playing another country. It’s a state playing another state. In Bombay, people have already started calling me K11P, as they do it in the film industry. But yes, I’m treating IPL like a film. I’m dedicating three months of my life to it till the tournament gets over and then I will go back to films. I have four films releasing this year. So it is a very exciting year for me in terms of film as well as cricket. Hopefully, we will win the tournament.

Meha Bhardwaj: Are you worried that the timing of these games are going to be in the evenings when people will be flocking to the stadiums instead of watching your films?

Preity Zinta: I’m going to tell all my producers to not release any movie between 19 April and 30 May. It will be suicide.

Meha Bhardwaj: Your very good friend Shah Rukh Khan owns another team Knight Riders. Now when you have conversations with Shah Rukh do you say — Oh you know what? We’re going to beat you hollow because we have Brett Lee. Do you have any of these friendly banters?

Preity Zinta: The only friendly banter we have is Kolkata and Mohali are coming to finals.

Meha Bhardwaj: Ness, any regrets about any players you wanted but could not get — like Dhoni went for a huge sum of six crore?

Ness Wadia: Our focus was not to have too many international players. We focussed on Indians who could play.

Meha Bhardwaj: Did you think during the auction that it was nicer to get these Indian players because at the end of the day people here welcome them in stadiums?

Preity Zinta: We are Indians. I mean, come on, you put me in a stadium and tell me are you going to cheer for Pathan or for Yuvi as opposed to Gilchrist? No offence, they are lovely cricketers. It is like when you go to an ozzie crowd and have Indians play there with them. They will first cheer for their home heroes and then they will cheer for the other guys.

Meha Bhardwaj: But you’ve got international players. Are you are happy with them?

Ness Wadia: We are happy with international players and we also have a lot of young Indian players below the Sreesanths and Pathans and Yuvis of the world. I think we’ve got a good mix.

Meha Bhardwaj: On the parting note, for everybody who is watching this show, what about would you like to say about King’s XI Punjab? What’s the message you want to give to your viewers?

Ness Wadia: I think the first thing we’re going to cricket fans is a great cricket team. We’ve got a lot of entertainment. We’ve got the likes of Brett Lee and Sreesanth, Yuvraj and India’s greatest all-rounder Irfan Pathan. So I think you will see a very Indian team. You’ll also see a lot of youngsters coming in. We’ve got guys like Tanmay Srivastava and Ajitesh Argal. Then there’s a young emerging cricketer Yash Gandhi who’s scored 365 runs. So this is basically a team for the people of India. It is a team which has a lot more Indians than the rest. It is India’s pride.

Preity Zinta: For me, it’s live Punjabi, play Punjabi. So we’re in Punjab and the spirit of Punjab means always having a huge heart and being very hospitable, and being a little crazy and having lots of fun. It’s young, it’s dynamic, it’s fun and we’re going to go and win the cup!

Not just glamour girls, Bollywood women get into business too

New Delhi, April 29 (IANS) If the men are doing it so are the women. From opening restaurants to starting hotels, actresses are also blurring the lines between the worlds of Bollywood and business. While actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Shah Rukh Khan and Suniel Shetty are thriving in the business world, their counterparts Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta are also giving them tough competition.

Sushmita was probably the first to turn entrepreneur when she set up her company Sensazione in 2006. Through her company, she plans to open a chain of hotels, lounges and spas. Besides, she has acquired 12,000 sq ft of space in Kolkata for a ‘lifestyle zone’, which apart from a huge open space will house a nightclub, a restaurant and a cigar lounge.

She says frankly that she was tired of being an actor and business had always been a second career option.

“Had I not been an actor, I would have been an entrepreneur. The lounge bar in Kolkata and my dream project, the spa, are all part of my effort to touch people’s lives,” the actress has been quoted as saying.

Sushmita has other plans too.

Under the banner of her production house Tantra Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, the ex-Miss Universe also wants to make meaningful films. Her first venture is “Rani Lakshmi Bai - The Warrior Queen”. The actress, who is directing as well as acting in the film, is currently busy with the pre-production work of the historical epic.

Her colleague Preity Zinta has become co-owner of the Mohali cricket team of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with partner Ness Wadia and two others. She is determined to make a go of it and says: “When I do anything in life for the first time, I want to succeed.”

“It’s 2008! Women should get more active in business. It’s very different from working on a film where you’re on your own when ‘action’ is called on camera. In a boardroom, there’s constant conference and multi-tasking. The creative process is different in both the spheres.”

And Aishwarya Rai, according to reports, has stepped in to resurrect father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan’s company AB Corp and is negotiating with filmmakers to restart production work.

Then there is Ayesha Takia who with restaurateur boyfriend Farhan Azmi is set to launch their first boutique hotel in Goa.

“It’s a dream come true for Farhan and I. We have been planning to do something together for the past year,” Ayesha said in a press announcement.

The couple has acquired a 200-year-old Portuguese bungalow in Candolim, which is just 10 minutes away from the beach. They plan to build a luxurious swimming pool, a lounge area and are working out details on how to entertain guests with good music and superb cuisine.

“Each of our boutique hotels will have 20 rooms,” Ayesha has said.

Her appreciative boyfriend adds: “Ayesha is interested in doing other things rather than just acting which is so great.”

There are others too — for instance, Raveena Tandon is contributing significantly to the running of her husband Anil Thadani’s film distribution business.

Former actress Twinkle Khanna is a successful interior designer and won the Elle Décor International Design Award. She floated a company called Mock-Ups that specialises in interior decoration, designing and executing spaces. Besides designing homes and offices, she also owns an interior designing store - the White Window - in Mumbai.

In 1940, legendary actress Devika Rani tried her hand at business by taking the charge of Bombay Talkies after her husband’s death, but she had to face failure.

But the new brigade is set to rewrite the rules.

Kings reign over hearts but fail to conquer

PL: Daler Mehndi enthralls audience, Yuvraj and Dhoni remain crowd favourites

It was the ‘karmyudh’. Kings XI Punjab led by local hero Yuvraj Singh took on MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings and the stadium could hardly contain its excitement.

It had the settings and the flavour of a festival — the dhol, bhangra, cheer-leaders, a star performance by Daler Mehndi and the Bollywood superstar Preity Zinta’s nervous presence. It was the much-anticipated carnival for the Tri-city.

Even though the PCA Stadium was far from being packed to capacity, a group of around 100 dancers did a 15-minute bhangra sequence followed by fluttering flags with the Kings XI Punjab team slogan ‘Live Punjabi’ and ‘Play Punjabi’ written on them.

Then it was Daler Mehndi’s turn to enthrall the audience, singing the Kings XI Punjab’s theme song ‘Panga na lena’ and also few hits from his famous albums.

As the evening progressed, the stadium began to fill. From the cricketing point of view, the match was a spectacle to behold, with 24 sixes and 35 fours hit during the match.

Once the floodlights came on, the crowd went crazy and started whistling and dancing in the aisles. It was a grand cricket party.

Beer mugs were the order of the day. Young girls were going gaga over Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, while Murali was the favourite among the children. Yuvraj and Dhoni remained the crowd favourites.

Zinta was seen biting her nails out of sheer nervousness while her team chased a tough target of 241 runs.

Yuvraj did manage to lustily hit a couple of blows but he could neither repeat his ‘six-sixers’ feat nor could he win the match for his team. Once his wicket fell, the crowd went silent with disappointment.

Though Sangakkara and Hopes kept the crowd’s hopes up till the end, the target remained tough to achieve. Right after the defeat of Kings XI Punjab, people deserted the stadium.

In the next round, the Kings XI Punjab will play Sachin Tendulkar’s Mumbai Indians on April 25 and most certainly, people will be hoping their favourite son Yuvraj Singh to make a come back.

Wins and losses are part of the game, says Preity The day finally dawned when Preity’s team — Kings XI Punjab — played their first match in IPL and she was all charged up for the D-day. Dressed in a white tee, Preity Zinta had her team’s logo on tees’s back. As Yuvraj Singh walked off to the centre pitch for the toss, Preity closed her eyes and was seen praying with folded hands. To her dismay, Yuvi lost the toss. But she, along with her franchisee and real life partner Ness Wadia, wished luck to Yuvi’s boys when they took to the field. Throughout the match, Priety showed signs of nervousness, excitement, and after the match’s disastrous results, resentment. She, however, said sportingly, “Wins and losses are part of the game, we will come all guns blazing in our next outing.”
