Broadway is Back and Running!
LET'S CELEBRATE! The Broadway strike that kept many shows on a hiatus is officially over. The stagehand strike lasted for about three weeks and shows will resume on the 29th of November.
The strike couldn't have happened at a worse time for Broadway. Such popular shows as "Wicked," "Jersey Boys," "Mamma Mia!" and "The Lion King" were shut during the lucrative Thanksgiving holiday week. It's normally one of the best times of the year for Broadway when the city is filled with tourists and Christmas shoppers.
The settlement came Wednesday night, the third day of marathon sessions between Local 1 and the League of American Theatres and Producers to end the lengthy work stoppage that has cost producers and the city millions of dollars.
Without providing details, League Executive Director Charlotte St. Martin called the deal "a good compromise that serves our industry."
"What is most important is that Broadway's lights will once again shine brightly, with a diversity of productions that will delight all theatergoers during this holiday time," Martin said in a statement. "We look forward to celebrating the season and welcoming our talented stagehands, and the theatergoing public, back to Broadway."
