Today sees the launch of band-id.co.uk, a new way for musicians to distribute and sell their music online. The BAND-ID music download card is a collectable, full colour plastic card printed with the artist’s specific artwork and details such as web address or email address. At the back of the card is a scratch panel, which conceals a unique PIN code. The artists’ fans use this code to download their digital music from the secure website.
The BAND-ID card is a physical medium to drive digital music sales. It gives the artist the opportunity to sell their music to fans who might not want to purchase a CD, or a digital version for artists who normally release on vinyl. It helps them to take advantage of the impulse buy at their gigs and encourages the fan to download their music without having to search amongst other artists at other music download services. When the fan redeems their code on the website, they also supply their email address which allows the artist to contact them about future releases.
