McDonald's Corp. announced that it will begin serving sliced tomatoes within the next seven to 10 days after a multistate salmonella outbreak caused the chain to pull the vegetable from the menu.
McDonald's was only one of many restaurants and grocery stores that stopped serving sliced tomatoes on Monday as a precaution.
At least 228 illnesses in 23 states were linked to this outbreak. Federal authorities have not pinpointed the source of the outbreak, which began in April. The tainted tomatoes most likely came from Florida and Mexico, were most of the tomatoes are supplied from.
The FDA has warned consumers against eating certain raw tomatoes: red plum, red Roma or round. Grape and cherry tomatoes or tomatoes still attached to the vine aren't linked to the illnesses.
