Willie Randolph has been officially fired as manager of the New York Mets, this coming 2½ months into a disappointing season that has followed the team’s monumental collapse last September. Even chants of “Fire Willie!” started the past few months in the crowd of Shea Stadium as the Mets continued to perform badly.
Bench coach Jerry Manuel takes over on an interim basis for Randolph. Randolph was known for his exceptional play as a six-time All-Star second baseman and as a coach with the New York Yankees.
