GLAAD Award Winners
"Ugly Betty" and "Brothers & Sisters" were repeat winners at Saturday's 19th annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards held at Kodak Theatre.
According to GLAAD, the awards "recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives."
The two ABC shows received awards for outstanding drama and comedy series, respectively - the same awards they won last year.
On "Ugly Betty," Michael Urie plays the flamboyantly gay assistant Marc St. James, and Rebecca Romijn portrays the transsexual magazine editor Alexis Meade. Matthew Rhys plays Kevin on "Brothers & Sisters," a member of the family who happens to be gay and whose dating life is a frequent subject on the show.
Singer and musician Rufus Wainwright was also honored for making a difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community.
"I'd like to thank GLAAD so much for allowing the world to see us as we are – as human beings – and to fight for us when we are being defamed and maligned," Wainwright said in his acceptance speech. "And also to allow gay people, who think that everything's fine, to actually realize that it's not, and that there is a lot of work to do."
