Favourite Vacation Spot
While it would be absolutely impossible to pick just one, when I was first asked to participate in the series, my mind immediately went to Mauritius - probably my most favourite vacations that we took as a family. Just a few hours off the coast of Africa (just east of Madagascar), this tiny island boasts the white sands and aquamarine waters that you`d expect of a tropical paradise, but also a rich and fascinating cultural experience that will catch you by surprise.
Where to Stay
My experience has primarily been in Grand Baie. A fun, low-key family favourite was Veranda, situated right on the water with individual cottages to allow a little privacy and down time.
The cultural diversity of this tiny island makes it a culinary treat, with variety to suit each taste. Mauritian cuisine is a mixture of Creole, Chinese, European, African and Indian. When you are there, you absolutely need to try the Creole Curry and some spicy samoosas. Here are just a few of the great restaurants to choose from: Le Tandoor for great Indian food; Alchemy - for classic grille fare (and excellent pizzas!); Le Capitaine - take advantage of all the fresh seafood with fresh lobster and specials like whole crab cooked in white wine.
When you're able to tear yourself away from the beach, there is a huge array of water related activities to enjoy. From snorkeling and kayaking to sunset cruises and tours on glass-bottomed boats. One of my favourite experiences was a trip to the local market - a colourful bazaar with everything from fresh fish and spices to tooled leather bags and embroidered fabrics to unexpected designer finds. Chanel, YSL t-shirts anyone? While the island was a former French colony and remains French speaking, many people are quite surprised by the large population of Indian descent.
A French conversational handbook (if you don't speak the language), while English is taught in school most people on the island primarily speak French. A small, light handbag to strap across your body and keep your hands free while you're out at the market or exploring. And then, just whatever you need to fully enjoy the beach and the balmy island lifestyle: sunscreen (!), bathing suit, a light summer dress, sandals that are easy to slip on and off and an exciting new novel or small stack of glossy magazines to enjoy on the beach.
My husband of course--my favourite person to talk to about anything and everything and sit watching the stars on the beach at night. He's also quite convenient to have on-hand for all the heavy lifting in the airport :)
The Next Spot I'd Like to Visit...
Paris for my birthday and hopefully Thailand later in the year, a completely different corner of the globe that I've been so curious to explore.
